Проект стандарта, разработанный группой ETSI SMG в начале 1997 г. и предназначенный для эволюции системы GSM (ранее в расшифровке EDGE вместо термина «Global» был термин «GSM»). Радиоинтерфейс EDGE надстраивается над существующей системой радиодоступа GSM, позволяя увеличить скорость передачи до 384 кбит/с.

Название проекта одноименного стандарта EDGE, разработанного группой SMG ETSI в начале 1997 г. Первоначально был ориентирован на систему GSM (ранее буква G означала GSM), однако в дальнейшем его основные положения легли в основу стандарта UWC-136. Новый радиоинтерфейс надстраивается над существующей схемой радиодоступа GSM и позволяет увеличить скорость передачи до 384 кбит/с и более без введения дополнительных сетевых элементов.

Basé sur la norme GSM (global system for mobile communications), le standard EDGE (enhanced data for GSM evolution) est un standard de téléphonie mobile plus rapide que le standard GPRS (general packet radio service). Il s’agit d’un standard intermédiaire destiné à assurer la transition entre la téléphonie mobile de 2e génération (2G), qui utilise le GPRS, et la téléphonie mobile de 3e génération (3G), qui utilise le standard 3GSM. Considéré donc comme un standard 2,5G (2e génération et demie), EDGE délivre les données numériques (voix, texte, multimédia et vidéo) avec un débit théorique de 240 Kbps (kilobits par seconde), et un débit effectif de 130 Kbps, qui passera ensuite à 384 Kbps. La téléphonie 3G se généralise en 2006. -
8 GSM
La norme GSM (global system for mobile telecomunications) est une norme de transmission radio-électrique permettant d’acheminer les données numérisées (d’abord la voix et le texte, puis le multimédia, la musique et la vidéo) d’un téléphone portable. Les premiers réseaux GSM sont lancés en 1992. En 2004, le GSM est utilisé par 10 millions de personnes. Cette norme devient le principal standard mondial en matière de communications mobiles (70% des usagers en 2005). Promue par la GSM Association, la norme GSM régit plusieurs standards de transmission: le standard GPRS (general packet radio system), le standard EDGE (enhanced data for GSM evolution), un standard intermédiaire avec débit plus rapide, et le standard 3GSM (3G + GSM), standard de téléphonie mobile 3G (3e génération). L’utilisation des standards EDGE et 3GSM débute courant 2004. Tout comme le HSCSD (high speed circuit switched data), une technologie permettant d’accélérer la transmission des données autres que la voix sur tous les réseaux GSM actuels. -
9 2G
2G (2e génération) est le sigle caractérisant la téléphonie mobile lancée au début des années 1990 et basée sur le standard GPRS (general packet radio service) issu de la norme GSM (global system for mobile telecommunications). La téléphonie 2G est caractérisée notamment par le codage numérique de la voix, l’apparition du SMS (short message service), la consultation possible du courriel et la fonction appareil photo. La téléphonie 2G cède ensuite le pas à la téléphonie 3G (3e génération), lancée courant 2004 et largement utilisée en 2006. GPRS (general packet radio service) signifie littéralement "service général de radiocommunication en mode paquet". Destiné aux téléphones portables, le GPRS est un standard de transmission radio-électrique permettant d’acheminer les données numériques (voix, texte et multimédia) en utilisant la commutation de paquets dans un réseau de téléphonie de type GSM (global system for mobile communications), avec un débit théorique de 115 Kbps (kilobits par seconde) et un débit réel de 50 Kbps. Il est progressivement remplacé par le standard EDGE (enhanced data for GSM evolution), au débit plus rapide, puis par le standard 3GSM (3G + GSM), un standard de téléphonie 3G (3e génération). -

En janvier 2007, la société Apple présente l’iPhone, un téléphone portable multifonctions qui intègre le baladeur de musique iPod, un appareil photo et un navigateur internet. Avec les caractéristiques suivantes: grand écran tactile (3,5 pouces), synchronisation automatique avec la plateforme iTunes pour télécharger musique et vidéos, appareil photo de 2 mégapixels, navigateur Safari d’Apple, système d’exploitation Mac OS X, téléphonie par les réseaux GSM (global system for mobile telecommunications) et EDGE (enhanced data for GSM evolution), connexion internet par WiFi (wireless fidelity) et Bluetooth. L’iPhone est lancé en juin 2007 aux Etats-Unis, au prix de 499 dollars US pour le modèle de 4 Go (gigaoctets) et 599 dollars pour le modèle de 8 Go. Le lancement en Europe est prévu pour le dernier trimestre 2007 et le lancement en Asie est prévu pour 2008. -

Это не самостоятельный стандарт, а метод увеличения пропускной способности в GSM, GPRS сетях. Метод основан на применении более оптимальных методов модуляции и канального кодирования.
